Day 12 – Become A Data Analytics Ninja With or Without Excel – 30 Day AI Challenge 2024

Welcome to the 2024 Edition of the #30DayAIChallenge. This year, we’ll be focusing on making Generative AI more accessible for all. So follow along and give each challenge a try yourself, plus share your own thoughts and experiments with a community of like-minded learners and tinkerers!*

Week 2‘s theme is “The Fast and the Curious: AI Drift“, focused on productivity and designed to help speed up tasks, plus reduce time spent on the mundane, both at work and home.

Today’s Challenge: Be Your Own Data Analyst With GenAI

Data is everywhere. From the way businesses make decisions to understanding personal fitness trends, data analytics is a skill that’s becoming increasingly crucial in our digital world. Today’s challenge, “Become A Data Analytics Ninja” is about harnessing the power of Generative AI tools to supercharge your data analysis skills. Whether you’re a spreadsheet wizard or a newcomer, today’s challenge will guide you through leveraging advanced technologies to glean insights from data more efficiently.

How Beginners Can Approach the Challenge

If you’re new to data analytics, the thought of diving into complex data sets can be daunting. Fear not! Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Sheets with AI features, and Microsoft Excel with CoPilot are here to make your journey easier.

  1. Start Simple with Google Sheets and Excel: Both platforms now integrate AI features that can perform tasks such as suggesting formulas, generating summaries, and even forecasting trends based on your data. Experiment with asking your sheet to “predict next quarter’s sales” or “summarize the main findings from this data.”
  2. Leverage ChatGPT for Data Analysis: ChatGPT, equipped with Advanced Data Analysis capabilities, can be a powerful ally. You can ask it to explain data concepts, analyze datasets you upload (within privacy guidelines), or even generate SQL queries based on your analysis needs.
  3. Practice Interpreting Results: Use these tools to generate insights and then take a stab at interpreting them. For instance, what does a trend in your data suggest? How might outliers affect your analysis?

Today’s Quick Challenge(s)

Here are some easy things you can try out yourself…

Example 1: Use AI to organize your data in Google Sheets…in this case, ask it to create a simple project tracker for your next family picnic (or other event). You can also take a data file and ask questions about the contents. This is extremely easy and intuitive, thanks to the Google Gemini integration into various Google products.

Example 2: If you use the paid version of ChatGPT, you can also use “Data Analyst” (previously called Code Interpreter) to automatically analyze and visualize your data (in the below test from last summer, I used publicly available data from the World Bank, but you can use just about any data you own, as long as it doesn’t contain sensitive, confidential or proprietary information. Enterprise-level access usually builds in data safeguards so may be ok to use if your company allows it).

Example 3: Use Copilot to ask questions of your Excel data

If you have access to Microsoft Office, including Excel and Copilot, try using one of your Excel files and ask questions of the data. At present, to use the AI features, the file must be saved on the cloud (e.g. Sharepoint) and the data formatted as a table for this to work properly.

For Advanced Users

For those comfortable with data analytics, leveraging GenAI can take your skills to the next level.

  1. Automate Routine Analyses with Excel CoPilot and Google Sheets: Use advanced features to automate data cleaning, perform complex analyses, and even generate reports. Explore custom scripts in Google Sheets or advanced formulas in Excel that can be auto-completed by AI.
  2. Deep Dive with ChatGPT’s Advanced Data Analysis: Push the boundaries by asking for predictive modeling, advanced statistical analyses, or even machine learning insights from your datasets. Pair ChatGPT’s analysis with your own expertise to uncover deeper insights.
  3. Integrate Across Platforms: Use APIs to integrate your analyses across different platforms. Automate data flow from Google Sheets to Excel, enrich it with external data sources, and analyze with ChatGPT for a comprehensive view.

Need More Inspiration? Here Are Loads Of Examples

Here are various past posts and experiments where I used Gen AI for data analysis and insights…check them out for inspiration…or better still, give them a try yourself! All of these use ChatGPT’s Data Analyst.

Future Possibilities

Today’s challenge opens the door to a world where data analysis is not only more accessible but also significantly more powerful. As GenAI technology evolves, imagine automated insights that could predict market trends with high accuracy or personalized health advice based on your fitness data. The possibilities are endless, and the path starts with becoming a data analytics ninja.

If you give any of these tools or challenges a try, leave a comment and share your experience! If you’re using other platforms to post, please tag your Facebook, Twitter / X or LinkedIn post with #30DayAIChallenge so others can find it too.

Till tomorrow…
